If there is one candy without which American Halloween is unimaginable, it is definitely candy corn! This tricolor treat, reminiscent of a kernel of corn, has been brightening the tradition of "trick or treat" for over 100 years. But where does it come from, why is it so popular, and why is it considered one of the most iconic US candies? Let us show you!
What exactly is candy corn?
Candy corn is a classic American treat consisting of small triangle-shaped pieces. Its colors evoke corn: a white tip, an orange center, and a yellow base. Although it looks like corn kernels, it is actually a soft snack made of sugar, corn syrup, and a little butter. Its texture is half-soft, half-crunchy – exactly the kind of candy you can munch on one by one or eat by the handful.
The history of candy corn 👻
The candy was first created in the 1880s in the United States. Initially, it was a seasonal treat, mainly enjoyed during harvest time. The real breakthrough, however, was brought by Halloween, when the "trick or treat" custom spread in the 20th century. Candy corn was cheap, colorful, and fit the autumn mood perfectly – so it soon became the most popular Halloween candy.
Why is it so loved in America? 🇺🇸
- Iconic appearance – instantly recognizable by its tricolor pattern.
- Halloween symbol – it is just as much a part of the holiday as jack-o'-lanterns or costumes.
- True US candy – a defining taste of many Americans' childhoods.
Although it is a divisive candy – some love it, others less so – one thing is certain: when it's Halloween, there is no real "trick or treat" experience without candy corn.
